H igh-capacity sand washing plants require substantial volumes of process water to scrub raw feed, classification slurries, and transport fines—often demanding between 250 m³ and 800 m³ of fresh water per hour depending on plant tonnage. In arid mining belts, drought-prone states, and environmentally sensitive river basins, securing continuous fresh water supplies poses a severe operational constraint. Furthermore, strict environmental protection acts prohibit the unconditioned discharge of untreated clay slurry into local watercourses or open land.
Historically, sand processing plants relied on expansive settling ponds or tailing dams to clarify wash water. However, unassisted gravitational settling of sub-10 micron clay particles and colloidal slimes is extremely slow, often requiring weeks or months to yield clear supernatant water. Tailing ponds occupy vast acres of valuable land, suffer immense evaporative losses, present catastrophic dam breach risks during heavy monsoon rains, and entrap hundreds of tons of fine sand and water in an unusable mud matrix.
To solve these challenges, Vyom Machinery pioneered the Zero-Slurry Closed-Loop Water Treatment System. This technology integrates High-Rate Thickener Clarifiers with fully automatic Chamber Filter Presses, enabling mine operators to recover and immediately recirculate over 95% of plant process water on-site, operating continuously without needing massive external settling ponds or fresh water wells.
The process begins in the High-Rate Thickener, where dirty wash water containing suspended clay and silt fines enters a central feedwell. An automated chemical dosing unit introduces precise micro-dosages of anionic or cationic polyacrylamide (PAM) flocculants. The flocculant polymer chains bind ultrafine suspended particles into heavy, rapidly settling flocs. Low-speed motorized rake arms continuously consolidate the settling sludge toward the central cone discharge, while crystal-clear overflow water spills over perimeter launders directly into the plant recycle reservoir for immediate re-use.
The thickened underflow slurry, now concentrated to a heavy sludge density of 40% to 50% solids, is pumped directly into heavy-duty Automatic Chamber Filter Presses. Driven by high-pressure hydraulic rams and ceramic-lined slurry pumps, the filter press forces liquid through reinforced polypropylene filter cloths under pressures exceeding 15 bar (220 psi). Moisture passes through the filter media, while solid clay particles are trapped within the chambers, forming solid, dry filter cakes with moisture content below 15% to 18%.
Once the filtration cycle completes, the hydraulic plate shifter automatically opens the chamber pack, releasing dense, stackable clay filter cakes onto a discharge conveyor. These dry cakes can be easily handled by standard front-end loaders, dry-stacked on site for quarry backfilling, or sold as a valuable byproduct to brickworks, ceramic manufacturers, and cement plants, completely eliminating liquid slurry tailings.
By transitioning to Vyom Zero-Slurry water recirculation architecture, quarry operators reduce fresh water makeup requirements by up to 95%, reclaim 100% of their operational footprint previously dedicated to tailing dams, and achieve total compliance with Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) environmental mandates. This technology ensures sustainable, uninterrupted 24/7 plant operation even in water-scarce regions.
